The Exeme Project has been conceived as a research-led academic effort to improve the representation of disabled people in society. In particular, the project is concerned with (neuro)rehabilitation following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other forms of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Minimising impairment and maximising ability, participation and quality of life is at the heart of The Exeme Project.
Exeme has identified the following pressing problems with medical rehabilitation and disability management in the UK and worldwide:
A lack of good quality data on relevant pathologies and their functional impact;
A substantial deficit in the professional and supporting resources available and therefore sub-optimal intensity of therapeutic interventions;
Disorganised, poor quality, incomplete clinical records with excessive duplication;
Poor communication between professionals and with patients and families, about the complexity of the clinical situation and the therapeutic journey;
Sub-optimal patient involvement;
Little explicit confident prediction of outcome.
